John’s Happy Tales Report
3/29/16 Mostly Happy Tales From Inside And Around The Kennel And Even Horses And Hounds At This Time Of Year.

Ok, it’s apparently officially time to start the hype for next month’s Horses and Hounds event which happens to be coming up this very Sunday from 2:30 until 5 o’clock on Piping Plover Road. I am fascinated by the name Piping Plover Road, but you don’t have to be. The physical location is just south and west of Lake Worth, a hop, skip, and jump from residents of Broward County, a little further for us Dade people, but well worth the trip and a nice afternoon out. It’s free and one of our major fund raising events for the year. The estate is beautiful, there will be food and a horse show, you can get up close and personal with horses, and if you are a dog, you don’t have to be a greyhound to attend. All well behaved dogs are invited and encouraged to take part in the doggie show. We will also have the usual silent auction with lots of great items to bid on, and they even have an area where the greys can mix and mingle and run around a little bit. The temperature is forecast to be right around eighty degrees so it should be pleasant weather. So make plans to attend, it’s a great way to spend a spring Sunday afternoon around dogs and horses in a beautiful country estate setting. I think I’ve just convinced myself to go.

P1080010We will have a few of our adoptables there to see and be seen with, but we can only bring so many. If you are coming stag and you want to come drag, contact Michelle and drop by the kennel early and you just might be able to bring one of them to the event as your own adopted hound if you stop by this week. Lynne, our famous collar lady from the Hialeah Kennel days, will be there with her handcrafted custom collars. Chris got Syracuse and New York Giants collars from her a couple years ago, and finally, our boy Diffy is able to wear the Syracuse collar, at least, with pride, and we’re hoping he’ll be able to again wear the Giants collar in his lifetime, but he’s already seven years old, so it’s maybe fifty/fifty with him, but you can get lots of other greyt looking neck wear from Lynne, you don’t have to go with team designs. Friends of Greyhounds will also have dollar bags of dog cookies. I urge you to buy some, the dogs like them and Michelle spent many hours of her waking life preparing them for this occasion, she has blisters, callouses, and mental scars to testify to this. There will also be a limited supply of inexpensive dog beds available, first come, first serve. In accordance with tradition, the dogs that we have available for adoption will be wearing colorful Leis, so don’t be afraid to come up and check them out if you see one you like.

2015 Donate Your Dime - Whole Foods Market® Coral Springs

2015 Donate Your Dime – Whole Foods Market® Coral Springs

In other news, Donate your Dime is back at the Coral Springs Whole Food Market from April 11th until July 3rd. Patrons will be offered ten cents and three options if they reuse their shopping bags, and one of the charity options will be Friends of Greyhounds. We are hoping to be able to get some volunteers and sit outside the doors this year. Ten cents a bag doesn’t sound like much, but last year we received over eleven hundred dollars, so it pays off in the long run. If they see us out front when they’re going in, it does plant a little seed in their heads, so it’s worth the effort.

Sam was delivered to his new home and it looks like he’s going to do very well. It seems that Sam is their first dog and greyhound, and they are delighted with all the things he’s been able to teach him about how to treat your pet. It looks like he’s hit the adoption lottery for sure. Ok, it looks like we’ve covered most of the excitement.

We also have the Pompano Beach Seafood Festival coming up at the end of April, and, as always and eternally, we can always use and even appreciate any and all volunteers, most likely you can spend as much or as little time as you have, and there’s a wide variety of things that need to be done. We can definitely use volunteers at this Sunday’s Horses and Hounds, with the auction and the booth or just hanging around with one of the adoptables, so if you have the time, we have the task, check with Michelle or Jerry and they will be glad to fulfill your volunteer wishes.
