John’s Happy Tails Report
4/20/14 Mostly Happy Tales From Inside And Around The Kennel And The Annual Easter Egg Hunt Lives On.

The annual Easter egg hunt for the dogs was held early this morning. It has become an annual event and the dogs love to run in the play yard and look for the eggs. They are like little kids and we did have some mishaps, but all in all it was a huge success. Atascocita Darby won the individual award for most eggs found. Astar Roman Hope found the golden egg with the big treat inside, but ate it before we could get it away from her. One of the volunteers stepped on what he thought was a chocolate egg, but it wasn’t an egg. It was apparently left for us hidden in the grass by one of the hunters. Gotta watch the ground when you walk in the grass in the play yard. Hallo Old Spice and Chumley won the father/son six legged race competition, but it was by forfeit as they are the only father/son team we have in the kennel at the moment. There was, as always, some controversy. The ducks and the iguanas were along the canal with their signs again protesting the egg hunt. A couple years ago one of the greys mistook a duck egg for one of the hidden Easter eggs, it was an innocent mistake, but you can’t convince a dumb duck of anything he doesn’t want to be convinced of, and they’ve taken to protesting our egg hunt the past two years now. The iguanas really don’t have any issues with us, but the ducks bring them along because the iguanas always look mad and the ducks think it helps sway public opinion in their favor.

Ok, you think I made that up because it was Easter and we were closed. Well, that’s not completely true. We really were open all weekend and were really very busy. U Haul Mack received an application last weekend and his future humans visited him again and finalized his adoption date and delivery on Saturday. Runyonland and Flying Hoosier also received applications on Saturday. We were also visited by representatives of the state and we’re hopeful that we can work it out so that we can get you visitors back to the kennels again to see the dogs. Today we sent Atascocita Effie and In The Process out together to a home that has previously had our greyhounds. They were both returns so we’re going to see how they do together on a home trial. Kane’s John also went to his new home, we think that he’s officially officially retired at last.We want to thank all of you who came to visit and adopt, this will definitely be an Easter long remembered and a life changing Easter for more than a couple dogs and people. Also, just to prove we are not breed snobs, a couple that was on their way to visit us found a stray dog on Red Road just down from the kennel. They coaxed the dog away from the road and brought him to us. Those of you that have been to our kennel know that Red Road is not a road to mess around on, whether you are a car, pedestrian, or lost dog. We got the dog safely in custody and are trying to find out if the dog has been reported lost by someone. It may be quiet at times, but it seems like there’s never a dull moment. Good luck to the adoptees and adopters from this past weekend, may your future lives be filled with an overabundance of love and good health. Also the same to the little guy that was rescued off the street today.

There were no returns this past week and only one new dog arrived, but there are more reportedly on the way. Gobie Special just arrived yesterday. She’s a black brindle, which is an unusual color. She was born on the 9th of July in 2012, so she’s not even two years old yet and I don’t believe she even had any professional races. While we’re here, I’d like to thank Jill officially, I’m sure the rest have already done so, for providing us with a very nice breakfast/brunch on Saturday. Jerry B. will be happy to know that there was no food excitement on Sunday. On Saturday, only one dumbbell forgot and brought his own food, but that’s ok, that made more available for the rest of them. We also wanted to thank our ‘yutes’ (sorry, but I love the movie ‘My Cousin Vinny”) for their dedicated service, especially Kim, Greg, and Amber, who always seem to be here when we need them the most.

Now I have to mention some of the dogs that our webmaster has pictures of, so that he can put up some of their pictures and make the blog pretty if nothing else. Kim’s favorite dog, the irrepressible Superior Destroy, whom she named Phoenix, got a long look this afternoon; she was in competition with Frizzell for the love of a couple. Actually, I think it was the couple that brought in the stray, so they’ve already saved one dog this week and are working on another. DKC Jagger and Chase the Storm made appearances in the office and were looking good, as did Kelso’s Red Rory and Kiowa Hoss Henry. Time to head up north, hope you had a Happy Easter, thanks for all of your support and come on down to the kennel if you get a chance.
